Woodgrain Background Stamp Project Ideas

Thanks so much to all of you who have left comments or messages about our new range of Background Stamps and Photo Stamps! There seems to be something for everyone in this release and we are so pleased you love them!! Over the next few weeks we will be sharing loads of projects using all of the new stamps. We have lots of different artists too, so there'll be lots of different styles and projects which will be amazing!

Today we want to start off with the Woodgrain Background Stamp:

This is such a versatile Background Stamp and can be mixed with lots of stamps and images - it's works well with the Wilderness Collection with it's rustic and earthy feel. Let's take a look at some projects...

These first few cards were created by Lynda Drynan. If you've been to some craft shows around Australia, you may have seen Lynda demonstrating on some booths, most recently on the Photo Continental booth. Her cards are always fab and these are no exception! Check them out:

  • Stamp Woodgrain Background onto cardstock using Vintage Photo Distress Ink and ink the edges with a sponge.
  • Select 3 Wilderness Filmstrips and colour the water section using Tumbled Glass Distress Marker.
  • Select 3 words from the Wilderness Wordstrip and edge with Tumbled Glass Distress Marker.
  • Mount Filmstrip and Wordstrips onto coloured cardstock that has been inked with Tumbled Glass Distress Ink. Mount all three images onto the card.

  • Stamp Woodgrain Background stamp onto cardstock using Tea Dye Distress Ink pad then smear slightly using waterbrush on stamped image.
  • Stamp frond from Wilderness Vol 2 stamp set into bottom left corner using Shabby Shutters Distress Ink.
  • Apply bird washi tape across the bottom of card. Stamp the compass (Wilderness Vol 2) into top right corner.
  • Stamp tree scene (Wilderness Vol 2) on white cardstock and sponge with Distress Inks: Tea Dye, Shabby Shutters & Tumbled Glass.
  • Mount onto green cardstock, add a Wilderness word to complete.

  • Sponge Tea Dye Distress Ink over white glossy cardstock. Stamp the Woodgrain Background over the top using Vintage Photo Distress Ink.
  • Stamp tree (Trees Stamp set) and colour using Distress Markers: Shabby Shutters, Vintage Photo & Peeled Paint. Cut and adhere to card.
  • Stamp the quote (Mail Art stamp set) with Fired Brick Distress Ink.
  • Wrap string around the bottom of card and rub with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Mount onto black card to complete.

  • Stamp Woodgrain onto white cardstock using Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Using old book pages and Tim Holtz grungeboard, cut out a set of trees using the Sizzix on the edge 'Treeline' die. Colour the bookpage with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Colour the grungeboard trees with Shabby Shutters Distress Ink. Affix both to background to resemble a forest of trees.
  • Stamp Friendship quote (Trees stamp set), mount onto green cardstock and adhere to card.
  • Stamp snail (Mail Art stamp set) and adhere to card. Mount entire stamped piece to black cardstock then onto a folded green card.

  • Stamp six of the images from Garden Inchiesstamp using gesso (clean stamp immediately!). Allow paint to dry thoroughly and ink with distress ink, doing two eachusing shabby shutters, broken china and barn door.  Cut around each image.
  • Stamp Woodgrain background stamp usingBrilliance pearlescent rust ink and sponge with rusty hinge distress ink.
  • Overstamp with Postal 6 Up frame stamp and trimclosely.
  • Affix a garden inchie to each of the framespaces, raising one of the images with foam dots.
  • Finish card using blue cardstock for the base, apunched strip along the long edge and a word from Full Bloom wordstrips.

  • Stamp the pair of birds from Love Birds, colourand trim closely.
  • Stamp Woodgrain background stamp using Rangerarchival sepia ink.  Sponge with brushedcorduroy and gathered twigs distress inks. 
  • Cut image apart to give two separate boards,leaving four boards intact.  Distress andsponge the edges of the two boards with walnut stain distress ink.
  • Stamp the boards with a variety offoliage/flowers (I used Wildflower and Foliage stamp sets) and layer to create afence type image.  Attach brown brads tothe tops of the single fence posts.
  • Using a light brown cardstock for the card base,affix fence with branch/birds coming from the left hand edge.
  • Finish card with a Wilderness wordstrip word.

  • Stamp size 8 white tag with Woodgrain backgroundstamp using Ranger archival black ink.  Highlightportions of the image with a white crayon then sponge with distress ink inwalnut stain and frayed burlap.  Thewhite crayon will resist the ink and give an aged look to the image.
  • Brush parts of the tag with rock candy distresscrackle paint and allow to dry.  Spongethe crackled areas with soot distress ink to highlight the cracked effect.  Distress edges of tag and sponge with sootdistress ink.
  • Sponge the back of a small playing card orsimilar embellishment with walnut stain distress ink (I used a Tim Holtz miniplaying card) and attach to tag at an angle. Select an image from theWilderness montage sheet, distress the edges and sponge with walnut staindistress ink.  Attach to tag with foamdots.
  • Select a word from the Wilderness wordstrips,distress and sponge with walnut stain distress ink.  Attach to tag.
  • Select a metal embellishment, I used a Tim HoltzIdea-ology philosophy charm, attach to bottom edge.
  • Colour some seam binding with distress stains ordistress ink in chipped sapphire and forest moss.  Tie to the top of the tag. 
  • Make a clear embellishment by adhering aWilderness montage image to the back of a Tim Holtz Idea-ology fragment charmwith glossy accents.  Attach to seambinding with a mini paper clip and Tim Holtz Idea-ology trinket pin.

  • Stamp Woodgrain background stamp using Rangerarchival black ink and sponge with walnut stain distress ink.
  • Layer image with beige cardstock and attachbrown brads to each corner. 
  • Affix a dark green strip across the woodgrainimage.  Select two vertical images fromthe wilderness montage sheet and affix to the left hand side of the greenstrip. 
  • Tie some twine around and affix to a brown cardfront.  Embellish with a word from theWilderness wordstrips.

  • Start with white cardstock, approx. 9.5 x 12cm.  Tear an A5 piece of scrap paperabout 1/3 of the way on the long edge and affix the shorter piece over the topthird of the white cardstock using removable adhesive.
  • Ink Woodgrain background stamp with Versamarkand stamp cardstock so that wood boards will run vertically.  The torn scrap acts as a mask to give aroughened, aged edge to the top of the fence.
  • Lightly sponge inked area with brown pastels (Iused dark orange PanPastel).
  • Reverse the torn paper, matching up the line onthe torn edge and either spray with pearlescent spray or sponge with bluedistress ink (I used Starburst Tibetan poppy teal).
  • Stamp fuchsia from Art De Fleur Vol 1 and lacybush from Foliage stamp set. Remove a little of the colour behind the fuchsia andbush with a rubber, then colour with distress inks.  This will give you a truer colour.
  • Stamp warm wishes from Bold Blossoms and mountover a die cut.
  • The fence image is layered with black and thenraised with foam dots over some teal coloured cardstock.  The card is finished with a pale blue stripembellished with brads and mounted onto a black card base.

  • Stamp Woodgrain background stamp using Rangerarchival sepia ink.  Sponge with brushedcorduroy and gathered twigs distress inks. Cut image apart to give four boards.
  • Stamp Dove Lake image from Wilderness Vol 1stamp set using Ranger archival black ink and colour with distress pens.  I used a glossy cardstock to give aphotographic effect.
  • Layer board pieces over image to create a frameand cut to size.  I put mine at angles togive that handmade look.  Distress andink the edges of each board and adhere over lake image.
  • Embellish with brown brads and the words ‘climbevery mountain’ from Wilderness Vol 1.

  • Stamp Woodgrain background stamp with Versamarkand emboss with white powder.
  • Colour image using pumice stone and tea dyedistress stains. 
  • Select a strip of four vertical images from theWilderness Vol 1 filmstrips.  Attach towoodgrain image so that the strip is at an angle.  Trim edges.
  • Attach to a black cardfront and embellish with aword from the Wilderness wordstrips.

  • Stamp Floral Post Collage stamp with Versamarkand emboss with white powder.  You couldalso use a postcard image from Art De Fleur Vol 2.
  • Spray image with turquoise pearlescent spray (Iused Starburst Tibetan poppy teal) and highlight flowers with softpastels.  Tear around image.
  • Stamp Woodgrain background stamp with Brilliancepearlescent rust ink and sponge with wild honey distress ink. 
  • Mount woodgrain image on a piece of dark tealcardtock, leaving room to tie some rust coloured cord around one end.  Embellish postcard image with a round paperclipand adhere over woodgrain at a slight angle. 
  • The card is finished with a Happy Birthday wordfrom Full Bloom wordstrips and a 20 x 21 cm rust card base.
