Herringbone Background Stamp Ideas

2 July 2015

Hello! We are sharing projects created with the new Herringbone Background Stamp here on the blog today! These cards will come together quickly which means that you can easily make a bunch for different occasions or to bundle as a gift for someone special.

This card by Joy Taylor shows how it can be embossed on vellum.

I chose to add only parts of the background stamps on my card, the background feature was the Herringbone, that I embossed on white card stock with white embossing powder, then adding some soft blending with Pumice Stone Distress Ink, splashing this surface with some water droplets.

Setting that aside to work on the rest of the card, I then took some vellum and stamped out the Clock background stamp with Versamark ink, also embossing this with white embossing powder, die cutting a circle feature and setting aside..

To add more colour to the card, I took out the Butterflies stamp set, stamped out a butterfly also with Versamark Ink and embossing with white embossing powder onto water colour paper, colouring the butterfly with my Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers, cutting out with a pair of scissors..

Time to assemble the card, adding teeny tiny pieces of foam mounting tape to the vellum, making sure to add to the under side where the embossing lied as so it would not be seen from the front, the circle was mounted so that some of the vellum hung off the side of the card stock.

Stamping out a sentiment from the Happy Birthday stamp set with Versafine Onyx Black Ink and trimming one end into a flag, adding this to the card along with the butterfly and finishing off the card with a scattering of sequins completed a cheerful birthday card.

This card by Rachel Greig shows how to use it with Hero Arts paint daubers:

Ink the stamp completely using Yellow Hero Arts paint dauber. Lightly dab onto the stamp in random areas with an orange paint dauber, then with a red paint dauber. Stamp onto white cardstock. The paints will mix together a bit and give a watercolour painterly effect. Die cut white cardstock using Sizzix Sassy Labels & Stitched Frames label die and stamp with a sentiment from the Happy Birthday Rubber Stamp Set using Vermillion Archival Ink pad. Wrap red ribbon around stamped Herringbone panel and adhere to folded red card. Add stamped label onto card with foam adhesive.

Robyn Wood has created some great cards using the Herringbone Background Stamp:

For this card, stamp Herringbone Background onto white cardstock using Rose Madder Archival Ink. Layer with purple cardstock and attach to card front. Select a section of three horizontal images from the Art De Fleur Vol 2 Filmstrip and trim to fit across the card front. Trim a greeting from the Sweet Treats Wordstrip and ink around the edges using a marker or ink pad. Affix to card front using foam tape.

Stamp Herringbone Background onto white cardstock using Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink. Trim to suit card front and sponge around the edges with Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink. Place a strip of cardstock, then ribbon along the lower edge of the stamped image. Affix to pale green card front. Trim out an image from the Sweet Treats Montage sheet and distress the edges. I used a sanding block for a different effect. Add to card front so that the image sits at an angle and use foam tape for height. Trim a greeting from the Sweet Treats Wordstrip and add to card front.

This next card uses an embossing resist technique:

Stamp Herringbone background onto white cardstock using Versamark ink and heat emboss with clear powder. Sponge with Squeezed Lemonade and Picked Raspberry Distress Inks using an ink blending tool. The embossing will resist the ink and give a variegated effect to the background. Wipe background with a tissue to remove any ink left on the embossed areas. Trim background panel to fit a white card front and layer with green cardstock. Stamp greeting from Bright Blossoms stamp set with Graphite Black Brilliance ink and emboss with clear powder. Trim wording closely and cut a V in the end for a flag type effect. Sponge the edges of the greeting with Squeezed Lemonade Distress ink and adhere to card front. Add a paper flower and accent with a button.

For our last card, Robyn has stamped the Herringbone Background onto a marbled backgrounds, it adds instant interest to the image.

Create a background by adding a small amount of Squeezed Lemonade, Barn Door and Ripe Persimmon Distress Paint onto a non-stick craft mat. Spritz with water to make the paint runny and drag some cardstock through the paint to create a marbled background. Allow to dry well.

Stamp Darkroom Door Herringbone Background stamp using Archival black ink. Trim to approx. 9 x 12 cm. Create a bit of interest by cutting the bottom edge of the pattern to give a zig-zag effect. Layer onto a 13 cm square of orange card and tie with red grosgrain ribbon. Mount the piece onto a 14 cm square yellow card front. Stamp the word ‘hello’ with the Darkroom Door Scratched Alphabet stamp set using Jet Black Archival ink and trim out closely. Affix to card front so that the word just overlaps the red ribbon.

Try this: The background technique gives a wonderful, random effect. Create a bunch of backgrounds at the same time to save mess and it will mean you have a nice stack on hand for future projects. Try spritzing the paint with glittery spray ink of similar tones for a different effect.
